In the spring of 2020 (pre-pandemic), I designed a 5-week course on Race, Language, and Disability. As part of that course, I explored the concept of incorporating student choice in assessment. I developed a rubric to evaluate students’ learning within critical reflections. The rubric was bare of any binding information regarding the form students’ critical reflections could take. I encouraged students to showcase their learning in any mode that appealed to them (e.g., traditional essay, video, artwork, etc.) As a result, I perceived extreme creativity and really high engagement with course topics within students’ critical reflections. I recently presented on that teaching experience at Michigan State’s Spring 2021 Teaching and Learning Conference. You can access my presentation and instructional materials (slides, recorded presentation, transcript, rubric, syllabus) via this Google Drive folder.
